Armed forces on alert and HAM radio to ensure smooth communication and safety during Cyclone Biparjoy
After making landfall on the Gujarat coast on Thursday evening, the violent cyclone Biparjoy, with winds of up to 140 kph, threatens to paralyse communication networks. To ensure efficient information transmission, officials have turned to HAM radio. In order to ensure smooth communication once Biparjoy strikes the beach near Jakhau port, the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA) has sent six HAM radio teams, two of which are in Kutch.
In times of emergency when wirelines, cell phones, and other conventional terrestrial modes of communication are inoperable, HAM radio is regarded as a dependable mode of communications. HAM radio, also referred to as amateur radio, uses radio frequency spectrum for non-commercial communication exchange.
"Where the cyclone's effects are expected to be greatest, six teams of HAM radio operators have been sent by GSDMA. Two of them are in Kutch, according to Dr Kausal Jani, a GSDMA HAM radio operator, who spoke to PTI.
He claimed that HAM radio functions during cyclones when all other communication networks are down and there is no energy. Calls can be made without a cell tower or the internet, he said.
He claimed that this method of communication is quite helpful in such emergencies.
"We can call disaster response teams when people need to be rescued or communicate emergency requirements through HAM radio," he stated.
Communication and electrical networks were down for six days after typhoon Tauktae slammed the coast in May 2021, according to GSDMA's Gaurav Prajapati. Only (HAM) radio was available to us for communication, the official explained.
Additionally, in Jakhau, where the cyclone is anticipated to make landfall in the evening, a mobile HAM radio unit has been set up.
