Different civilizations throughout history separately established the idea of zero (0) as a placeholder for numbers and a digit in and of itself. Around the third century BCE, zero appears for the first time in writing in ancient Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq). The positional numeric system of the Babylonians had a placeholder sign for zero.

However, the formalisation of the concept of zero in mathematics is frequently attributed to the Indian mathematician and astronomer Brahmagupta. The Brahmasphutasiddhanta, which was written by Brahmagupta in the seventh century CE, contains guidelines for arithmetic operations involving zero and negative numbers. He also talked about how a number becomes zero when it is subtracted from itself. Work of Brahmagupta had a significant impact on the advancement of mathematics in India and afterwardsexpanded to new regions of the globe.

It's crucial to remember that zero wasn't only discovered and understood by a single person or society. Over the years, it was developed by mathematicians from various cultures, and it gradually became a fundamental component of both mathematics and the modern number system.
